The Legend of Zhong Kui

Zhong Kui, known as the "Demon Queller" or "Ghost King," originated from Tang Dynasty folklore around the 8th century. According to legend, Emperor Xuanzong fell gravely ill and was tormented by demons in his dreams. In his fevered visions, a fierce warrior appeared—ugly in appearance but noble in spirit—who drove away the evil spirits and restored the emperor's health.

Upon awakening, the emperor commissioned the court painter Wu Daozi to create a portrait of this dream warrior. The resulting image became the iconic representation of Zhong Kui: a bearded figure in scholar's robes, wielding a sword, with a fierce expression that could frighten demons but protect the innocent.

Throughout Chinese history, Zhong Kui has served as more than just a mythological figure—he represents the triumph of righteousness over evil, the protection of the innocent, and the power of determination in the face of adversity. His image adorns door gods (menshen) paintings, protecting households during the New Year celebrations.
